We are pleased to give back to the San Antonio community through the support of the
George Gervin Youth Center, Inc.
The George Gervin Youth Center, Inc. opened in 1991 as a comprehensive youth development agency to provide an extensive array of services to support at-risk youth and their families. Based in San Antonio, the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization was co-founded by George “Iceman” Gervin and his sister, State Representative Barbara Gervin-Hawkins. The mission remains unchanged: to create an innovative learning environment that assists school-age youth who are falling through the cracks to obtain a high school diploma and be properly prepared for the workforce, building a foundation to improve their life situation.
The Academy (GGA) - formerly named Building Alternatives Charter School – was chartered as a dropout recovery high school in 1995, and was one of the first twenty charter schools in the state of Texas. In 2008, GGA began serving PreK to 12th-grade students, which prompted the name change.
For over thirty years, GGA has been a high-quality, public charter school that provides effective early childhood learning experiences. GGA embraces bilingual programming for non-English and English-speaking children and has developed special education programs to ensure a high-quality education for all students. The Academy’s strategies address the needs of struggling and advanced learners while ensuring students earn a distinguished high school diploma. Additionally, GGA provides a variety of career pathways and training programs that allow students to earn industry credentials and/or college credit before graduating from high school.
GGA employs qualified experienced staff who are well-trained in using high-quality instructional materials and implementing research-based strategies. As an open-enrollment public charter school, GGA serves PreK to 12th-grade students from Bexar and surrounding counties with three locations, the main location sitting on a 13-acre campus located at 6944 Sunbelt Dr, San Antonio, Texas.
